Reading a Spin Axis Chart on the Monitor

A walkthrough of what the tilt number, the curve arrow, and the dispersion oval on your session screen are actually telling you.

First-time fitting clients often glance at the session screen and see a wall of numbers before we've even swung a club. Most of it isn't important moment to moment. Three elements are worth learning to read, because they tell the whole curvature story on their own.

The Tilt Number

Usually shown as a signed number in degrees — something like "-4.5°" or "+6.2°" — this is the spin axis tilt itself. Negative typically indicates a leftward tilt (draw for a right-handed player), positive indicates a rightward tilt (fade or slice). The size of the number matters as much as the direction: a tilt inside roughly 3° usually plays as a gentle, useful curve, while anything past 8–10° is generally read as an unwanted slice or hook.

The Curve Arrow

A visual arc overlaid on the top-down shot trace, this shows the actual flight path the ball took from launch to landing. It's the most intuitive element on the screen because it matches what you'd see standing on the range, but it's also the noisiest — wind and mishits can distort a single shot's arc even when the underlying axis tilt was reasonable. We look at the average shape across a full set of swings, not any one arc in isolation.

The Dispersion Oval

Plotted after several swings, this oval shows where your shots are clustering left-to-right and short-to-long. A narrow oval pointed straight down the target line indicates a consistent axis tilt and consistent distance control together. An oval that's narrow side-to-side but stretched vertically usually points to a distance or strike-quality issue rather than a curvature one — useful for telling the two problems apart quickly.

One swing's curve arrow is a data point. A full set's dispersion oval is the actual diagnosis — that's why we wait for the pattern before recommending a fix.

Putting It Together

During a fitting, we watch all three update together as specs change. A spec adjustment that tightens the dispersion oval and pulls the average tilt number toward your target is a genuine improvement. One that only changes a single flashy shot on the curve arrow, without moving the oval or the average tilt, usually isn't — which is exactly why we build recommendations off the full session, not the best single swing.
