What a Shaft Spec Sheet Doesn't Tell You
Weight, torque, flex, and material all shape when your face closes through impact — which is exactly what tips your spin axis one way or the other. Here's how the numbers connect.
The Number That Shapes Your Axis Most
Shaft weight interacts with your tempo more than any other single spec. A lighter shaft generally releases earlier, closing the face sooner through the hitting zone; a heavier shaft tends to release later, leaving the face more open at a given point in the downswing.
Neither timing is inherently better — but a mismatch between your natural tempo and the shaft's release point is one of the most common, and most fixable, sources of axis tilt we see on the monitor.
Two Different Numbers, Often Confused
Flex
Flex ratings (Ladies, Senior, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff) aren't standardized across brands — a "Stiff" from one manufacturer can play noticeably differently from a "Stiff" from another. Flex describes overall bend relative to swing speed and tempo, nothing more precise.
Torque
Torque measures how much a shaft twists under load. Lower torque generally feels more stable for faster, more aggressive swings; higher torque can add feel and a softer release for smoother tempos, but can also add unwanted face rotation for some players.
Tip Stiffness
Two shafts with identical overall flex labels can have very different tip sections — a stiffer tip generally launches lower and spins less, independent of the flex written on the label.
Steel, Graphite, and Multi-Material
Steel is heavier and more consistent shaft-to-shaft, giving precise feedback and the standard choice for iron and wedge shafts among players who prioritize feel and repeatability.
Graphite's lighter weight raises swing speed for players who benefit from it and dampens vibration for more comfortable feel — standard in drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids, and increasingly common in irons for slower-swing-speed players. Multi-material shafts blend a steel tip with a graphite body for a middle ground on feel and weight.
