Sidespin vs. Spin Axis Tilt

Two terms that get used interchangeably around the range, and mean genuinely different things on a launch monitor screen.

Ask ten golfers what causes a slice and most will say "sidespin," which isn't wrong exactly, but it skips a layer that actually matters for fixing it. On a modern radar-and-camera launch monitor, total spin on a golf ball is a single number that can be broken into two components: backspin, which lifts the ball, and sidespin, which curves it. Spin axis tilt is simply the angle that describes the ratio between those two components, expressed as degrees left or right of vertical rather than as a raw rpm figure.

Why the Distinction Actually Matters

Sidespin as a raw rpm number tells you almost nothing on its own, because it scales with total spin rate. A shot with 4,500 total rpm and 400 rpm of sidespin curves differently than a shot with 2,200 total rpm and the same 400 rpm of sidespin, even though the sidespin figure is identical in both cases. Spin axis tilt normalizes for that by describing the relationship as an angle, which is why it's the number that actually predicts curvature and why fitters talk in degrees of tilt rather than rpm of sidespin.

What Sets the Tilt

Spin axis tilt is set almost entirely by the relationship between clubface angle and swing path at the moment of impact, with strike location adding a secondary contribution through gear effect. A face that's open relative to path tilts the axis toward a slice; closed relative to path, it tilts toward a hook. The path itself mostly influences starting direction, not curvature — a common source of confusion, since golfers often assume an "outside-in" path is what causes a slice, when it's really the face staying open relative to that path that does it.

Chasing "more sidespin" or "less sidespin" as an isolated target misses the point — the tilt of the axis, not the raw quantity of sidespin, is what predicts how far off-line a shot will finish.

How We Use This in a Fitting

During a session, we don't just read the tilt number and stop there. We compare it against your face-to-path relationship and strike location on the same swing to figure out how much of your curvature is coming from delivery and how much is coming from equipment reacting to that delivery. That breakdown is what determines whether a fitting change — different face progression, a heavier shaft, a lie angle adjustment — will meaningfully move the axis number, or whether it's purely a swing issue equipment can't solve.

The Takeaway

Sidespin and spin axis tilt describe related but distinct things. If you only look at raw sidespin rpm, you're missing the number that actually explains how far your ball curves — and without that number, it's hard to know whether an equipment change stands a real chance of fixing your miss.
